FLOAT
A NEW IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCE
Conceived and Written by Eric Rose
“A few summers ago, while vacationing at a cottage in Quebec, I found myself on a rainbow bacon floaty in the middle of a lake. While I drifted, turning in the current, I closed my eyes and could hear my wife and two children's voices laughing, swimming, splashing, and jumping off the nearby dock mingled with the haunting call of a loon. I could hear from a distance a conversation of a young couple mixed with the close-up sound of water lapping against my bacon floaty. The longer I allowed myself to float down the lake freely, the more meditative the experience became. The experience reminded me of the lazy summer days I have spent with friends and family, engaging in the long-held Calgary tradition of floating down the Bow and Elbow Rivers. As I floated, I conceptualized a new immersive audio experience, FLOAT, for a blindfolded audience lying in a theatre on various floaties drifting along a river of sound.
I imagine the sound journey of FLOAT starting in a hyper-realistic context of floating down the Bow River and then, perhaps, seamlessly drifting into a shopping mall, a Pow-Wow Round Dance, a corporate boardroom, an ice-cream shop, etc... and everywhere the audience floats you hear fragments - of conversations, music, laughter, warnings, secrets - subtly accumulating the feeling of what it means to be alive right now, with all its contradictions, beauty, longing, worry, restlessness, politics, and mundanity.”

ABOUT
FLOAT will build on Eric Rose’s body of work as a creator of sensory experiences for blindfolded audiences. These experiences allow audiences to participate in the creative process by imagining the story's visuals inspired by the meticulously crafted sound design, field recordings, musical score, interviews and recorded dialogue.
The first phase of development for FLOAT, completed over the summer of 2025, involved extensive research and consultation, and the creation of a comprehensive sound library working with sound designer Anton deGroot and the project’s co-creators. Together, they mapped out the key fragments that will form the foundation of the overall structure of the FLOAT experience, ensuring a rich and diverse soundscape for the audience.
Ultimately, FLOAT will offer an auditory odyssey that captures the essence of living in Calgary at the present moment. FLOAT will create a shared experience that transcends individual boundaries and fosters a sense of collective belonging.

Known for his wit, warmth, and captivating stage presence, Kris Demeanor has performed across Canada and internationally, earning acclaim as a multi-disciplinary artist who bridges the worlds of music, poetry, and theatre. His work delves into the personal and universal, and the album, “Songs for my Father to Fall Asleep to”, is his most intimate recording, celebrating life in loss through shameless nostalgia and undying affection for friends and family.
Kris is a Mohkinstis (Calgary) born singer-songwriter, poet, and storyteller whose work explores the intersection of music, memory, and connection, mixed with a nice sprinkle of biting social satire.
A celebrated figure in Calgary’s cultural community, Kris was the city’s inaugural Poet Laureate in 2012, recognizing his ability to weave compelling narratives through both verse and song.
His work with the Making Treaty 7 Cultural Society, Ghost River Theatre, One Yellow Rabbit, and North Country Cinema, has continued answering the question- What does it really mean to live in this place, at this time?
Kris dedicates his recent work to his daughter Aviva and partner Deborah, celebrating the enduring joy and beauty they bring to a turbulent world.

Hello, my name is Cedric Lightning. I’m from Morley, AB—“Mini Thni”—of the Stoney Nakoda Nation, just west of Calgary, and from Samson Cree Nation in Maskwacis, AB. I grew up surrounded by music and song, always pushing myself to learn and sing all styles of powwow and round dance. Singing has guided me through healing, humour, laughter, and grief—it is an energy, an expression, and a medicine.
I am a member of the powwow drum group Krazy Creek, with whom I’ve toured across powwow trails and communities throughout Turtle Island. Beyond the powwow grounds, I’ve had the honour of sharing my voice at major festivals including the Calgary Folk Music Festival, and as part of Making Treaty 7.
In addition to performing, I am a drumstick maker. Each stick is crafted with care, designed to carry respect for the drum, for the singers who use it, and for the communities it brings together. This work keeps me closely tied to tradition while also letting me explore design and creativity.
This is my third collaboration with Ghost River Theatre, following The Great Alberta Sound Bath Experience and Echoes of the Land. I believe that when different voices, perspectives, and cultures come together, something extraordinary is created.
